To promote scholarship
Dr. James F. Elrod, a man with deep roots in Coatesville, IN spent his early years on a farm in the area, where he developed a strong connection to his community. Known for his unwavering passion for giving back, Jim dedicated much of his life to supporting causes that reflected his values. To ensure that his legacy of generosity would continue, he established several charitable funds. These included contributions to the Coatesville-Clay Township Public Library, which served as a cornerstone of education and community engagement, and a scholarship at Indiana University for students pursuing degrees in Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance.
Brother Elrod was a most generous person leaving funds from his estate to the Greencastle Presbyterian Church, Coatesville Methodist Church, Coatesville Christian Church, Indiana University Foundation, Sigma Pi Educational Foundation, and Whitelick Community Foundation
In addition to these, Jim created a scholarship specifically for members of Beta Chapter of Sigma Pi at Indiana University. This scholarship is awarded to initiated, full-time undergraduate members of the Beta Chapter who are pursuing any accredited academic degree at IU. The award is based on a combination of academic achievement, personal worthiness, and financial need, ensuring that it reaches those who not only excel academically but also demonstrate integrity and require financial support.
Though Jim passed away in 2005, the impact of his contributions, particularly to Beta Chapter, continues to resonate. His legacy lives on through the lives he has touched and the opportunities he has created for future generations.
As of September of 2024 this fund has an endowment of $266,447.26 with only the income being available for scholarships. Each year at least one scholarship of $1,000 to $2,500 will be awarded with the possibility of multiple scholarships being awarded depending on market conditions.
The window to apply opens in January and closes at the end of March. Awards are given in the May to June timeframe. Apply by clicking the Sigma Pi scholarship link below.
